What is AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers — the responses ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews give when someone asks for a recommendation. Instead of ranking a page in a list, the goal is to become the answer itself.
What does AEO actually mean?
Answer Engine Optimization is the work of making a business easy for AI systems to identify, understand, trust, and cite. When someone asks an AI engine a question like "who's a good employment lawyer near me," the engine assembles an answer from what it has read across the web. AEO is about making sure your business is part of that answer.
It covers three things: giving engines clean structured data about who you are, publishing answer-first content they can extract, and earning corroboration from third-party sources they already trust.
Why does AEO matter now?
Buyers increasingly start with an AI engine instead of a search box. In some industries the shift is dramatic: 77.67% of legal queries now trigger a Google AI Overview, the highest rate of any industry (SE Ranking).
AI referral traffic is still small — roughly 1–2% of sessions for most businesses — but it converts far above organic. That combination, low volume and high intent, is why the category is worth building for early.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO ranks pages in a list of links. AEO gets you named inside a single generated answer where there is no list to scroll. They share inputs, but they are not the same job — only a minority of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10, so strong SEO does not automatically transfer to AI visibility.
Frequently asked
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- They're used almost interchangeably. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasizes being the answer; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emphasizes the generative engines producing it. In practice they describe the same work.
- Can I do AEO myself?
- The fundamentals — clean schema, answer-first content, accurate business data — are things any team can start on. The harder part is third-party citation building and ongoing measurement across engines, which is where most businesses bring in help.
